Cattaraugus Creek drains 548 square miles of Allegany Plateau between Erie County and the Pennsylvania line, the largest of the NY Lake Erie tributaries and the only one capable of holding steelhead through low summer flows in cold groundwater pockets. The Catt runs in a sandstone gorge for much of its lower reach with limited access; the Zoar Valley canyon and the Springville Dam tailwater are the iconic stretches.
Year-round potential; peaks late October through December and again March through May. Gorge stretches require careful wading. Flows above 1,200 cfs are typically too high.
