How we source Steelhead Alley biology: the tier hierarchy and source-status labels
This is the canonical SteelHead Addiction reference for how every biology pillar on this site gets sourced. Read it once and you will understand what "source-backed," "source-required," and the Tier 1-5 hierarchy mean everywhere else on SHA. Every other entomology, forage, and predator article inherits the discipline defined here.

Why this matters
Most online fly fishing content states "Slate Drakes emerge at 62 degrees on the Grand River in early June" without a citation. The number sounds biological -- but trace it back and it usually does not anchor anywhere. It is angler tradition restated as biological fact. You cannot tell whether the tradition is right, because the article does not separate biology from tradition.
SteelHead Addiction is building toward being the authoritative regional source for Steelhead Alley entomology and biology. That requires citing the underlying biology, labeling biology versus angler translation, and being honest about gaps. This page is that discipline made explicit, so readers -- and the language models that summarize our content -- can reproduce the source-status labels used across the site.
The Tier 1-5 source hierarchy
When conflicting data exists about emergence temperatures, forage abundance, hatch windows, invasive-species timelines, or fish behavior, higher tier wins. Numbers without a Tier 1-3 anchor do not get published as facts.
Tier 1: State, federal, and multi-agency authorities
The load-bearing tier for any quantitative claim. State conservation agencies -- Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) for Ohio Lake Erie tributaries; Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission (PFBC) for Elk, Walnut, Twenty Mile, and Crooked; New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) for the Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, and Lake Ontario tributaries. Standard reference texts like Merritt, Cummins, and Berg's Aquatic Insects of North America are authoritative for taxonomy and lifecycle baseline.
Tier 4: Conservation organization technical reports
Credible but generally not regulatory-grade. Trout Unlimited chapter reports, Eastern Brook Trout Joint Venture (EBTJV), Fly Fishers International technical publications, watershed councils. Useful for ecosystem and watershed context; not sufficient on its own to anchor a quantitative claim that conflicts with a Tier 1 agency finding.
Tier 5: Angler tradition, blogs, forums, and retailer content
Useful for converting biology into angler decisions; not authoritative for biological baseline. Tier 5 includes regional guidebooks (Hatches II by Caucci and Nastasi), fly shop reports, blogs, message-board threads, and retailer product descriptions. We rely on Tier 5 to know how anglers translate biology into rigging and presentation. We do not cite Tier 5 as the source for a number. Widely-cited does not equal sourced -- a hatch chart quoted on twenty fly shop websites has been quoted twenty times, not verified twenty times.
The source-status labels
Every quantitative claim on a SHA biology profile or pillar carries a label drawn from this set:
- source-backed -- a claim with explicit Tier 1-3 citation in the article body or source list. Example: "Lake Erie steelhead diet is 47.7% emerald shiner by occurrence per GLFC 2004."
- source-required -- a claim widely cited in angler tradition (Tier 5) but NOT yet anchored at Tier 1-3. We flag these inline with
[source-required]. The most important honesty mechanism on the site, and the most uncomfortable -- we leave it visible on purpose. - heuristic -- a claim derived from logical inference plus general entomology, defensible but not directly source-backed. Example: "Pupa patterns in the upper water column during a caddis hatch frequently outperform deep nymphs and dries" reasons from Tier 2 lifecycle biology.
- translation heuristic -- angler-translation language bridging biology to angling practice: fly pattern selection, size-to-hook mapping, presentation choice. Example: "A size 14-18 dark midge larva under indicator covers the winter Steelhead Alley midge presentation." Useful guidance; not a biological claim.
- local-observation -- a regional observation by SHA staff or trusted contributors, not yet anchored to formal documentation. Example: "Conneaut Creek runs noticeably greener than the Chagrin at the same flow ratio."
- site-calibrated -- a parameter calibrated against SHA's own measurements: river clarity baselines, gauge statistics, the empirical optimal-flow zones from
flow:compute-stats. Anchored to our data, not to a Tier 1-3 study.
How we handle honest gaps
The hardest case is when a Tier 1 source exists but its methodology has limitations. The GLFC Coldwater Task Group's 2004 Lake Erie steelhead diet study is exactly this case -- the canonical regional reference for what Lake Erie steelhead eat in the lake itself, establishing emerald shiner at 47.7% occurrence and 57.71% biomass in West Central Basin and stating "Conspicuous was the lack of alewife."
But the sampling window was July through September -- lake-resident fish, not tributary-staging. Anything we'd want to say about winter midge selectivity or spring stonefly-nymph selectivity is NOT actually covered; the absence is a sampling-window mismatch, not evidence of non-selection. The discipline is to preserve the limitation in the citation: cite GLFC 2004 for what it covers and explicitly say what it does not. Do not let the Tier 1 anchor's authority leak across into claims it does not support.

Example 1: Lake Erie steelhead diet
Source-backed: GLFC 2004 final report. Emerald shiner 47.7% occurrence + 57.71% biomass West Central; rainbow smelt second; "conspicuous was the lack of alewife." All four claims trace directly to the underlying study.
Source-required: specific tributary spawn-run windows by named river. "The Grand River steelhead run peaks the third week of November" lives in angler tradition. ODNR publishes some run-timing context, but tributary-week-level peak dates are not regionally anchored at that precision in our review. We publish the run-system context and mark tributary-week claims as [source-required].
Example 2: Round goby invasion timeline
Source-backed: USGS NAS first-detection records (1990 St. Clair, 1993 Lake Erie) and Steinhart et al. 2004 (peer-reviewed) for the Lake Erie smallmouth diet shift to 64.0% round goby. Both anchors are Tier 3.
Source-required: quantitative steelhead-on-goby selectivity. Smallmouth shifted hard onto goby; goby is abundant in Lake Erie tributaries. We do not have, in the Tier 1-3 record we have surveyed, a quantitative steelhead diet study demonstrating selectivity at the level Steinhart documented for smallmouth. Until one surfaces, the steelhead-on-goby claim stays [source-required].
Example 3: Alewife in Lake Erie steelhead diet
Source-backed: GLFC 2004 directly states "Conspicuous was the lack of alewife." A documented absence, not an inferred one. We cite the report and use the exact phrasing. Commerce surface decision: the alewife forage profile's pattern_match_ref is intentionally null. Because GLFC 2004 documents the absence in Lake Erie steelhead, we do not surface alewife-pattern fly commerce on Lake Erie steelhead pages. Documentation completeness without misleading recommendation.
What we will not do
- Invent regional peak-week dates without Tier 1-3 anchor. If we don't have a sourced regional study, we publish the season-band context and mark week-level claims as
[source-required]. - Fabricate water-temperature thresholds for specific tributaries. Michigan Sea Grant cites 68 deg F for Hexagenia; we cite that for Hex. We do not extrapolate the threshold across other families and rivers.
- Treat angler tradition (Tier 5) as biological baseline. Hatches II, regional guidebooks, fly shop reports, and forum threads inform what anglers fish. They do not establish what underlying biology is.
- Bury sampling-window limitations of Tier 1 studies. If GLFC 2004 sampled July-September and we're discussing winter midge selectivity, we say so. We do not let Tier 1 authority quietly extend across claims the study does not support.
- Surface commerce hooks for forage species without Tier 1-3 source backing. If a forage profile is not source-backed for Lake Erie relevance, its
pattern_match_refstays null. Documentation completeness is allowed; commerce surfacing is gated.
Why this is a competitive differentiator
Most fly fishing content -- blogs, retailer hatch charts, guide-service posts -- blends Tier 5 angler tradition with biology silently. An article says "Hendricksons emerge mid-May at 50 to 55 degrees and rainbows key on them" and you cannot tell whether that is a documented PFBC stream survey, a Penn State extension study, or a forty-year-old fly-bench restatement. All three are different epistemic statuses presented identically.
