A little rain in the forecast. A mostly dry Saturday outlook. Keep the rods ready—and leave room for the forecast to change.
The rain dance has made it onto the calendar. It has not yet signed a contract.
There is a reason to keep October 31–November 1 open. The National Weather Service has a chance of showers in the Thursday-night-to-Friday-morning window, followed by a Saturday forecast that is largely dry at the four locations we checked. For anglers making weekend plans, that gives us something useful to watch.
Thursday night is the watch window
As checked Tuesday afternoon, the chance of rain is smaller near the Rocky and higher farther east. These are forecasts for individual locations, not rainfall totals for entire river basins.
| Forecast location | Thursday night Oct. 29 | Saturday Oct. 31 |
|---|---|---|
| Rocky / western Cleveland, OH | 20% shower chance | 68°F · mostly cloudy |
| Inland near Fairview, PA | 40% shower chance | 67°F · mostly cloudy |
| Gowanda / Cattaraugus area, NY | 50% shower chance | 66°F · partly sunny |
| Pulaski / Salmon River area, NY | 60% shower chance | 59°F · mostly sunny |
Temperatures shown are forecast air highs. Rain probabilities follow NWS narrative forecasts. Saturday weather does not establish river conditions or fishing quality.
There is a useful limit to that optimism: the Gowanda and Pulaski forecasts currently describe less than a tenth of an inch of new rain possible Thursday night. We do not yet have evidence of a substantial, widespread soaking. A rain icon alone cannot tell us whether a river will rise or whether fresh steelhead will move.
Make Friday the decision point
Keep a destination and a backup in mind. On Friday, compare the rain that actually fell with the river’s response. Open the Smart River Gauges, read the observation times, and look for what changed. Use a dated local fishing report alongside the numbers.
If the water has changed, adjust the plan to the conditions you find. If the showers barely wet the pavement, keep expectations grounded and work with the water that is there. The forecast is a reason to pay attention; the river gets the final vote.
Saturday looks worth keeping on the calendar
The checked Saturday forecasts offer mild air temperatures and little rain. Sunday brings another shower chance—currently 30–50% across these points—so keep checking as the weekend gets closer. Neither day has earned a guaranteed fishing verdict.
For now, tie a few leaders, check the waders, and keep the coffee plan alive. There is room for optimism. The fish can handle their own public relations.
