A dated account of Lake Erie walleye recovery and its limits.

Collapse, closure and coordinated recovery

A 2019 USGS-listed management history links Lake Erie's early-1960s walleye collapse to intensive harvest and deteriorating water quality. It records a 1970–1972 closure because of mercury in fish tissue, with the ban lifted in 1973.

An interagency management framework followed in 1976. The account attributes the 1980s rebound to improving environmental conditions, harvest regulation and strong recruitment together. It also records later declines and continuing management adjustments.

This is not a story of one closure solving every problem. The 2019 account describes both commercial and recreational fisheries. It does not establish today's abundance, quotas or health advisories.

For reproduction, see the walleye life cycle.
