Best Dry Flies for Inland Trout
A trout sipping a dry fly off a glassy seam is one of the more agreeable spectacles a person can stumble upon while standing knee-deep in cold water. Inland trout in the rivers within two hours of Steelhead Alley — brookies in ANF headwaters, browns in PA Class A streams, wild rainbows in WNY freestoners — see a defined set of hatches across the year. These are the dry patterns that match them, ranked the way trout actually evaluate dry flies (which is to say, severely).

Buyer's Guide
The five must-have patterns
Parachute Adams (#12–#18) for general mayflies; Elk Hair Caddis (#14–#16) for caddis hatches; Stimulator (#10–#14) as a hopper-dropper indicator; CDC Comparadun (#16–#20) for technical sulphur and BWO water; foam ant (#14–#16) for sunny afternoons. Five patterns, three sizes each, you cover the calendar.
Match the hatch (within reason)
A Parachute Adams in three sizes fakes most mayfly hatches well enough. The trout that refuse it want a CDC Comparadun in the exact color and size. Pick your battles — most fish do not require the dissertation-grade match.
Floatant matters more than fly choice
A premium hackle pattern that is sunk and waterlogged catches nothing. Carry desiccant (Frog's Fanny, Loon Top Ride) and dress the fly between every fish. The difference is dramatic.
