Best Carp Flies
For carp, compare small nymph, bugger and crayfish-style candidates with the water, fish behavior and permitted methods. This is an editorial starting selection, not tested performance evidence. Carp on the fly is the warmwater equivalent of bonefishing — sight-cast presentations to tailing fish in shallow water, with a refusal-or-eat trigger that has nothing to do with luck and everything to do with presentation. Lake Erie's flats around the islands hold carp that will eat a #8 weighted nymph (a Carp Bitters, Crawfish Crawly, or San Juan Worm) presented within 12 inches of the fish's mouth. The trick is finding the fish (polarized glasses, calm water, sun overhead) and presenting the fly without spooking. Casts must land softly; flies must sink at the right rate; the strip must be subtle. When the technique clicks, carp on the fly is the most rewarding warmwater game.

Buyer's Guide
Backstabbers and crayfish
The backstabber (rabbit strip with bead chain eyes) and a small weighted crayfish pattern are the two foundational carp flies. Olive, brown, and rust are the colors. Size 6 to 10.
Sight-fish or blind cast?
Sight-fishing tailing carp on flats is the premium experience. Blind-casting structure also works in stained water. Either way, set the fly within 12 inches of the fish's nose — too far and they ignore it.
Soft landing matters
Carp spook fast. A weighted fly that splashes blows the fish out. Tie or buy with bead chain instead of dumbbell eyes for clearer water and skinny flats.
Sight-fishing flats: gear specifics
A 6 or 7-weight rod, a tropical-grade floating line, a 10-foot leader tapered to 4X, and weighted #8-#12 nymphs. Polarized glasses are non-negotiable. A baseball cap with a long bill cuts glare. Stalk the fish; do not wade fast; do not splash. A spooked carp doesn't come back for 30 minutes.
Pattern selection by feeding mode
Tailing fish (head down, eating): small weighted nymphs (Carp Bitters, Crawfish Crawly). Cruising fish: small weighted streamer (#10 Olive Bugger). Surface-sipping fish (rare): cricket / hopper pattern. Most Lake Erie shallows carp are tailing or cruising. The bottom-presented nymph wins most days.
